I’ll admit it – I have never watched any of the old monster movies, including Dracula with Bela Lugosi – but I do know who Bela Lugosi is.
When I was younger, I had a serious case of Tim Burton fever – it affected my day-to-day life greatly. Symptoms included me watching every Tim Burton movie way too many times, including the very awesome film Ed Wood, about a failed director in the 50’s. Ed Wood is responsible for what is considered by many to be the worst movie of all time, Plan 9 From Outer Space.
Anyway, the movie tells how Ed finds and recruits a past-his-prime Bela Lugosi to star in his
shitty movie. Lugosi is played by Martin Landau – and though I don’t know much about Lugosi himself, I think Landau did a great job in the role – he portrayed him as very troubled, complex, and just… kind of sad. But I’m guessing that’s how you would describe a lot of formerly-great people who are now past their prime and largely forgotten.
I had a lot of fun with this piece – The lighting is so distinctive and attention-getting, and I used a mix of pencil, artists’ markers (which I’m still learning how to use), and ink to make it.
